South Jersey Newborn Photography | Image Is Everything Studios

Wondering if your baby is too old for newborn photos? Older newborn photography is absolutely possible, and at Image Is Everything Studios in South Jersey, we love showing parents that beautiful portraits don’t have to happen within the first 14 days.

While the first two weeks after birth are often considered the ideal time for traditional newborn photography, that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your opportunity if your baby is a little older.

In fact, we recently photographed the sweetest baby girl at six weeks old, and her session was a perfect reminder that beautiful newborn portraits aren’t limited to those first 14 days.

Why Do Photographers Recommend the First 14 Days?

There’s a reason newborn photographers typically recommend scheduling sessions within the first two weeks after birth.

During those early days, babies tend to sleep more deeply, curl naturally into those cozy newborn poses, and are often easier to settle into wrapped setups.

But here’s the thing: every baby is different!

Some newborns are wide awake at just five days old, while others are perfectly content sleeping through their portraits several weeks later.

There is no magic switch that flips when your baby turns two weeks old.

Meet Our Beautiful 6-Week-Old Newborn!

We recently welcomed an adorable six-week-old baby girl into our South Jersey photography studio.

And guess what?

She had absolutely no intention of sleeping through her entire session! 😂

Instead, we were treated to those beautiful wide eyes, sweet expressions, and all the personality that was beginning to shine through.

Did we need to make a few adjustments along the way? Of course!

But that’s part of working with babies. We follow their lead, allow time for feeding and comforting, and adjust our approach to what works best for each little one.

The result? Beautiful portraits that her family will treasure for years to come.

What Makes Older Newborn Photography Different?

When photographing babies who are four, five, or even six weeks old, sessions may look a little different from those photographed during their first few days.

Older newborns may:

  • Spend more time awake and looking around.
  • Have stronger neck muscles and enjoy stretching out.
  • Be more alert to their surroundings.
  • Prefer certain positions over others.
  • Give us some pretty adorable expressions!

And while we may not be able to achieve every traditional sleepy newborn pose, there are still plenty of beautiful ways to photograph your baby.

Sometimes those wide-awake portraits end up being the family’s absolute favorites!

Our Approach to Older Newborn Photography

At Image Is Everything Studios, we understand that babies don’t follow schedules, especially when they’re brand new to the world.

Our newborn sessions take place in our cozy, private studio in Pitman, NJ, where we allow time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and plenty of cuddles.

We never force a baby into a pose or expect them to do something they’re not comfortable with.

Whether your baby is five days old or six weeks old, their comfort and safety always come first.

Our goal is to create beautiful portraits while making the experience enjoyable for both you and your little one.
